Beyond the Screen Door

I padded across the entryway and nudged through the cracked screen door into the midday warmth. Stepping onto the coarse stone of the front porch, the world felt vast and open. I hopped down to the bottom step, where a curled brown leaf lay resting against the riser. I reached out one paw and pressed down on its brittle stem. It gave a sharp, satisfying crinkle against the concrete. Sitting low on the warm slab, I quietly watched a single black ant trace the jagged edge of the stone, enjoying the gentle rhythm of distant cars humming down the street.
