Kneeling against the polished surface, I nudged the double-six tile into the center axis, then aligned four perimeter tiles into a disciplined dot-matrix grid. When the afternoon sun slanted across the table, striking the beveled rim of a nearby glass tumbler, a focused band of caustic light refracted over the tiles, illuminating the pips like a charted constellation pointing toward the upper shelves.
