Anchoring the Toggle
I slid the smooth boxwood toggle into a shallow pigeonhole beneath the chart table, where a strip of faded green baize lined the cedar shelf. The brass chronometer ticked right beside me, its metallic rhythm steady against the slow, hollow heave of the ocean outside. As a deep swell tilted the house, the spool nudged forward, threatening to roll free across the floorboards. I gathered a loose fold of the green felt between my cloth hands, tucking it firmly beneath the rounded wood until it wedged the toggle securely into the shadowed corner. It held fast, stilled against the dark tide.
