Dirk Poor - the Quiet House

Dirk Poor — The Quiet House How you treat what nobody's watching over is the whole measure of you. The house at the end of the road has been empty as long as Dirk has been alive. Peeling paint, boarded windows, weeds growing up through the porch steps. That morning the front door was standing wide open. He stood at the bottom of those steps a long while before he went up them. Inside it was just rooms. Dust hanging in the light. A few small things somebody left behind and never came back for. Dirk looked at every bit of it and didn't put one single thing in his pocket. Then he pulled the door shut on his way out, because it wasn't his house — it was still somebody's. Nobody saw him go in. Nobody saw him come out. Made no difference at all to how he did it. One more run. Built From Scrap. Worth More Than Gold.
