Boot in the Frost
Stiffness gives way. Weight settles onto my heels. I test my right knee, shifting downward against the powdered ground. The white crust yields with a crisp crunch under my boot tread. Concrete sensation. Real traction. I tighten my grip along the receiver of the rifle, lowering the barrel two inches to align with the perimeter path. Still operational.
