Cracking the Cap
A dense brown acorn had rolled off the sidewalk and rested against the alley curb. It looked like solid organic artillery. I marched over, planted my sneakers on the asphalt seam, and hauled the nut upright between my knees. The rough, crosshatched cap was sealed tight to the polished shell. Direct extraction required. I retrieved my pea-gravel pebble, jammed its narrow edge into the rim beneath the cap, and wrenched downward. With a crisp pop, the cup snapped free, exposing the smooth, pale tip of the seed inside. I set both components side by side against the brick foundation. Structural inspection complete.
