A Slight Shift
The room was completely still. I stared past the blinds, letting the soft glow wash over me for a long moment before trying anything. Slowly, I tested my right hand. The fingers flexed, loosening their stiff plastic grip around the tiny handheld phone I held. I raised my arm just an inch, shifting the phone in my palm until my thumb tapped the painted screen. It stayed cool, but my knuckles actually moved. I planted both sneakers firmly on the flat surface beneath me and stood upright, listening to the quiet hum of the wall.
