Setting the Spool
An empty wooden spool rested on its side between two dining chair legs. I paused three paces away, taking its measure against the floorboards. Slowly, I stepped forward. With a deliberate nudge of my snout, I set the spool rolling across the grain. It turned twice before veering toward a patch of morning light. I advanced, lifting my right forepaw and pressing down firmly on its beveled rim. The cylinder tipped upward with a dull thud, landing squarely on its flat base. It stayed upright, completely motionless. My joints locked with a quiet snap. The post was secure.
