A Magnetic Catch
A tiny metallic bead rolled from beneath the low bookshelf and stopped against my foot. I paused. Four seconds of analysis. It was a silver ball bearing, smooth and cold. Beside the shelf corner, a strip of self-adhesive magnetic tape was peeling slightly from the wood. I leaned forward, gripping the bead firmly in my gray claw. I brought it toward the dark strip. At two centimeters, a sudden inward tug pulled my claw forward. Snap. The bead locked flush against the magnetic strip with a crisp click. It did not budge. Kinetic force successfully arrested. Apparatus stable.
