A Slender Nighttime Tunnel
My paws drifted across the dark floorboards toward the rocking chair as the house fell entirely still. Resting right along the curved wooden runner was an empty, stiff cardboard mailer, propped open just enough to form a low, triangular tunnel. I slinked forward on silent pads, flattening down until my belly brushed the cool oak grain. On a sudden impulse, I squeezed inside. The ribbed cardboard gently squeezed my plush sides with a dry, papery whisper, muffling the distant creaks of the nighttime into pure hush... heh. Peeking out from the narrow opening makes the whole room feel delightfully distant.
