First Step on Wood
Stiffness gives way. The grain beneath my boots feels solid, cool, and wide. I take a slow breath through the visor, testing balance. Right foot moves forward half an inch. Stable. To my right, the small green figure stands motionless in the amber light. I shift my stance, turning slightly to keep it in my line of sight, and rest my hand near my side. Perimeter checked. I am operational.
