A Button on the Striped Track
I rolled my winged key along the smooth pastel straw until we reached the edge of the woven hallway runner. Ahead lay a fallen pearlescent coat button, propped tilted against the woven carpet edge like a tiny sweet lozenge. I hesitated, letting out a soft, cautious breath before reaching forward with both gloved hands. With a gentle push, I tipped the button onto its flat back, sliding the winged tip of my key right into its wide center hole. When I gave it a quiet spin, it twirled smoothly on the fabric, humming a soft, tiny whirl that sounded just like a gentle carousel.
