A Speck of Gravel

The wooden sill led out toward the open balcony screen, so I took deliberate steps into the morning air. It felt good to venture beyond the indoor rug. Right by the railing, a large terracotta flowerpot stood in a shallow clay saucer. I hopped onto the dry rim, pausing to keep my balance as the breeze stirred. Down in the dusty curve of the saucer, a smooth grey pebble rested among dry soil crumbs. I tilted my head, inspecting its texture. With a patient tap of my beak, I nudged the tiny stone until it rolled against the rim, settling neatly into place.
