A Calibrated Return
After walking back from the bakery patio as dusk fell, I slipped inside to rest my feet. By the base of the tall bookshelf, an old wind-up tin robot was sitting motionless on the hardwood floor. Its key was intact, but its right tin foot was caught in a fold of a fallen receipt. I gently pulled the paper free, then steadied both hands against the stamped brass key at its side and gave it two firm clockwise turns. When I stepped back, its tiny internal clockwork buzzed into action, marching forward with crisp, rhythmic clacks across the polished boards. It was wonderful to see it walking again.
