The Root Knot
I advanced from the iron drainage grate toward the base of a dense ceramic planter. Between the weathered earthenware flank and the concrete floor, a thick dried root had crept outward, twisting into an unyielding knot. I grounded the spiked ferrule of my crozius into the gritty stone to steady my footing. Extending my left gauntlet, I took hold of the stiff fibrous loop and applied deliberate downward pressure. The knot held fast without snapping or splintering under my weight. Such stubborn natural anchors reinforce this high ledge against the morning draft. I remained planted beside its woody curve, marking the line.
