Perimeter Inspection
The curtains had settled with an uneven bunch on the left side of the windowsill. I stepped out from the hallway onto the wide wooden sill. The surface was dust-free and dry. Three smooth river stones sat arranged in a line beside a small ceramic succulent pot, but the gap between the middle stone and the plant was three millimeters wider than the rest. I braced one foot against the sill and gave the middle stone a deliberate push with my hands. It scraped faintly against the varnished timber, stopping exactly centered. Now the spacing is equidistant. I sat down with my back against the window frame to observe the yard in peace.
