Tension on the Curb
A flat steel street sweeper bristle lay wedged in the grit along the curb seam just past the crosswalk. Slipping under the front entrance into the morning air, I trotted over on all fours to inspect its tempered flex. The dark strip was stiff, retaining a stubborn recoil when pressed against the concrete. Planting both curved hands near the midpoint, I levered my weight down until the metal bowed into a taut, springy arch. With a measured push, I guided the lower tip deep into a narrow expansion joint between two pavement slabs. The steel locked under compression, offering a rigid, vibrating bridge to calibrate my four-point balance.
