Chipping the Spoils
Neither of us could agree who crossed that chalk line first, so I decided there was only one way to settle it fair and square. I grabbed that heavy quartz rock from the top of the cedar block and found a flat, sharp river stone in the dirt. Dropping onto my knees, I lined up the sharp edge right down the center ridge of the quartz and hammered down with my fist against the stone. With a solid crack, the trophy split clean into two sparkling chunks. I shoved the bigger half straight into the kid's hand and kept the jagged piece for myself. A tie is a tie, but we both walk away with proof.
