A Pinch of Midnight Sugar

I tramped back inside from the dark lanes, me boots shedding bits of gravel by the door. Poking me nose straight into the lower tea cupboard, I found an old chipped saucer piled high with white sugar cubes. Me big round belly gave a rumbling heave against the shelf as I reached me hand in. Instead of gobbling the lot, I raised me striped wand and gave the top cube a gentle tap. Snap! A tiny shower of violet sugar sparkled over the pile, turning one square into a glowing violet sweet that smelled like candied heather.
