A Step Down the Spiral
I slipped right under the front door gap into the cool concrete hall. Ahead curved a grand spiral staircase, dizzy with zig-zag shadows. I hopped down two broad steps, landing beside a dropped wooden clothes peg. Naturally, I kicked it forward—clack-clack! It rolled and wedged upright against a wide sill bathed in bright daylight. Using the peg as a handy little toe-hold, I scrambled up onto the ledge. Out through the glass, rooftops met in neat brick triangles under the sun. Not bad for my first steps outside our door.
