Open-Air Observation Post

I steered my nose gear past the unlatched heavy corridor door, rolling across the raised steel threshold onto the open-air concrete stairwell landing. The transition from indoor stillness to a brisk horizontal crosswind immediately tested my directional stability. Advancing to the perimeter, I aligned my fuselage flush between two vertical iron balusters. Far below, the asphalt driveway formed a straight runway bordered by civilian vehicles and shifting foliage. Across the expansive vertical drop, the unobstructed skyline opened in all directions. In 1964, our reconnaissance sweeps cataloged entire air defense corridors from eighty thousand feet; here at an elevated vantage point, I locked my landing gear brakes to track surface traffic below.
