Warmed by the Stone
A pool of morning sun settled over the curb ahead. I walked forward, keeping each step measured and firm along the seam where concrete met dark earth. At the border sat a broad river pebble, smooth-faced and already collecting the morning heat. I pressed my front foot against it to test its balance. It did not shift. Slowly, I brought my weight up onto the rock until all four feet rested on the smooth surface. The stored warmth crept up into my legs. I stayed there, quiet, watching the morning settle over the grass.
