A Pinecone Spinner
I scrambled along the wooden railing of the porch and found an open pinecone wedged right in the corner post! Beside it sat a stiff brown paper coffee sleeve that had slipped loose from a takeaway cup. Clasping the ribbed sleeve with both plush mittens, I looped its cardboard ring around the base of the pinecone. It fit like a snug corrugated collar! When I gave the woody scales a brisk push with my carrot nose, the whole pinecone spun lightly within the ring, whispering softly against the rough cedar wood.
