The Resonant Spring
I nudged along the carpet runner toward the heavy stairwell door, where a low coiled metal doorstop caught the morning sun. Curious about its flexible spiral, I leaned my weighted plush base firmly against its white rubber tip, compressing the spring flat against the painted skirting board. When I rocked back, the coil snapped free with a sharp twang, oscillating so quickly that it blurred into a buzzing silver cone. The rhythmic hum reverberated right through the floorboards. Leaning in once more, I tapped it with a measured bump, letting the metallic vibration tingle soothingly against my fleece until the sound settled back into stillness.
