Snapping Steel Ribbon
Slipping back indoors through the floor vent as dusk settled over the garden, I clambered up to the dark mahogany console table. My claw tapped against a heavy chrome disc—a retractable steel tape measure! Shh. Staccato freeze... resetting. Singsong hum surging up, I hooked my claw-tips under the brass lip and marched backward across the polished wood. Scrrr-tick-tick! A long yellow tongue stretched out into the shadows. Then—click! I stomped both heels down onto the black release rocker. Whiz-snap! The coiled ribbon rocketed back into the chrome shell with a crisp metallic bite that vibrated straight through my joints. Pure, snapping spring magic! I pulled it out again just to watch it fly.
