A retractable clothesline unit was anchored to the stucco wall near the balcony rail. I reached up and grasped the taut nylon cord extending toward the opposite bracket. By applying downward deflection with my right forearm, I tested the tensile load. The integrated spring coil inside the plastic drum whistled faintly, compensating for the displacement. I hooked a small curved key ring found on the sill over the line, letting it slide along the angled descent. It accelerated cleanly until the nylon chord brought it to an abrupt, balanced stop.
