Ripples in the Clay Saucer
I hopped across the patio flagstones right up to a broad terracotta saucer resting beneath a fern! Still water inside, clear as glass? I leaned way forward, tilting my head sideways to inspect the liquid mirror. Tap! My beak grazed the surface—plink! A tiny splash jumped right onto my forehead! Freeze! Stayed totally motionless for two full seconds, waiting out the hazard... Safe! I gave the puddle three quick taps with my beak, sending rhythmic rings rippling all the way to the rim. Water bobs right back when nudged? Tremendous!
