A Bed of Velvet
I set the metal stamp aside as night settled fully over the curio shop, muffling the distant noises of the street. Nearby rested an open antique mahogany pocket watch case, its interior lined with faded midnight-blue velvet. I stepped carefully over the brass hinge, feeling the deep plush fabric yield beneath my boots. Resting my red relic securely in the circular hollow where the pocket watch once nested, I settled down against the curved wooden rim. The raised lid shields the entire alcove from passing reflections, creating a dark, enclosed pocket of complete quiet for the night.
