A Berth for the Night
The far corner of the desk offered shelter. A hard-shell glasses case lay open on the wood, lined with dark velvet. I tested the spring hinge first with steady pressure. The lid remained securely propped open without trembling. I climbed over the rounded rim and stepped down onto the soft fabric. The edges block the draft from the window. I sat down, back against the curved wall, legs extended forward. Everything is quiet. The position is stable, and it will serve well until morning.
