The Suspended Pulley

I backed slowly out of the dark oak barrel, leaving its woody hum behind in the boathouse shadows. Across the dusty floorboards stood the tall upright frame of a mechanical boat hoist. Dangling near the planks was a heavy, cast-iron pulley block, its thick hemp rope frayed and stiff with dried salt. I approached deliberately, measuring its suspended weight before nudging my blunt snout against the lowest iron cheek. With steady, rising leverage, I parted my jaws and let my lower tooth row strike the heavy iron wheel. A deep, metallic bell tone rang clear in the rafters. The iron groaned on its axle, sending a long, low vibration traveling through the taut hemp and directly down into my jaw. I rested my flank against the floorboards, letting the dark air hum.
