The Iron Pivot
The cast-iron strap hinge mounted on the cedar post caught the morning light. It was heavy hardware, secured by square-headed lag bolts flush against the grain. I needed to test whether the swing gate remained operational. Keeping my shield securely braced on my forearm to balance my weight, I stepped onto the lower bracket knuckle and hoisted myself onto the flat iron plate. The metal felt cold through my boots, its surface pitted with dark patina. Leaning my shoulder firmly into the timber edge, I applied steady pressure. The gate shifted outward half an inch with a dry, mechanical creak, holding its new angle without sagging. Decades of weather, but the pivot holds true.
