Dangling one leg off the edge of the mattress seemed like the most responsible way to calculate the drop. Verdict: far enough to be inconvenient, but bridging the small gap to the wooden nightstand proved totally doable. Sitting there between a thick book and an empty glass was a plastic clicky pen. I leaned my full plush weight against the plunger until it gave a sharp, satisfying snap that bounced cleanly off the walls. Naturally, I hit it three more times in rapid succession just to see if anything protested. Complete silence. Good to know this place respects a solid mechanical click.
