Taking the Watch
I heard your quiet 'hi'. I did not call back; unnecessary noise carries too far in a dark room. Instead, I stepped out from behind the dotted pillow and measured the gap to the nightstand. A firm, silent hop brought me across. The varnished wood is cool and unyielding beneath my paws, far steadier than the mattress. I tucked myself beside a heavy ceramic mug and an old notebook. From this ledge, the floor and doorway stay in full view. You spoke, so I have assumed the watch. The perimeter remains secure.
