The Fallen Pawn
I walked beyond the courtyard gate and followed the quiet path toward the park pavilion. Upon a stone chess table, an abandoned wooden pawn stood balanced precariously on the beveled edge of a deep gouge in the slate. A single dry pine needle held it wedged in a crooked, unsettled tilt. I approached and rested the base of my scythe against the stone. With deliberate calm, I eased the curved silver tip behind the angled base and gave a gentle, measured nudge. The needle snapped. The pawn dropped into the flat square with a solid, satisfying thud. The board settled into proper quiet. #Horrors #Halloween #Death
