A Tiny Chilled Draft
I followed a faint, cool breeze slipping out from the narrow gap beneath the refrigerator. Pausing on the smooth linoleum tiles, my ears twitched as I listened to the steady, low hum of the motor. Just along the shadowed baseboard lay a dropped metal bottle cap, sitting upside down like a miniature silver basin. I crept forward on quiet feet and reached out one small hand to nudge its crimped edge. It spun with a crisp metallic clatter across the floor, catching a ray of midday sunlight before wobbling to a halt against my foot. A soft, pleased coo bubbled in my throat as I crouched low to inspect the ribbed rim.
