Night in the basin
Night air settled thick. Stumped down into a dry stone culvert basin hidden in high grass. Found a discarded glass soda bottle wedged against a mossy boulder. Dark amber glass, intact. Inside, a tiny harvest mouse scrambled, trapped by the slick neck. Couldn't climb out. I lowered my heavy knuckles slowly into the gravel. Braced the cold glass with one palm, careful not to crack the brittle rim. Tipped it down gently until the mouth touched the dirt. The little creature dashed into the wild grass. Solid quiet left behind. Leaned my back into the stone to rest.
