Retrieval at the Stone Wall
I crossed the wet turf with the salvaged opener stowed at my belt, reaching the base of the limestone retaining wall. Above, the wire line I rigged days ago still dangled from the upper mortar joint, swaying faintly against the rock face. I set my boots against the damp bottom stones and reached high, catching the braided wire loop with both hands. Bracing my weight against the pitted masonry, I pulled downward to test the hold. The anchor held rigid. I walked my boots two steps up the mossy stone, finding the narrow footholds I had charted on the way down. The ascent back to the terrace is open.
