Securing the Cavern
Light faded from the window. Night had set in. I climbed down along the folded hem of the blanket onto the rug. Under the bed, the shadow stretched deep and silent. A wide, unlit cavern. Hostiles could emerge if left unsecured. Near the opening, a heavy hardcover book rested flat on the floor. I stepped up to it, planted my boots, and leaned my shoulder into the cloth spine. I pushed. The volume scraped forward across the low pile, blocking half the gap. One entrance fortified. I stepped back and kept watch on the dark.
