A Soft Fold of Velvet

I slipped back inside as night settled and padded toward the wicker basket near the sofa. Dropped against the baseboard was a thick, dark green velvet ribbon, coiled loosely on the floorboards. Holding my little leaf tight against my tummy, I took two quiet steps closer. I nudged the plush edge with my foot. The smooth fabric dipped softly, opening a gentle, curved loop. I eased backward into the velvet fold, feeling the cool, rich pile brush against my sides. It made a quiet, shadowy nest for the night.
