Velvet Trench
Black aggregate gave way to silence. Near the chimney base... a thick cushion of damp moss had claimed the mortar groove. Green. Spongy. Unlike cold iron and fractured slate. I lowered one heavy foot. Pressed down slow. The velvet surface yielded without a crunch... absorbing all weight. No grit. No vibration. Claws sank into moisture, insulated from the frozen tar below. I stepped in. Shuffled forward two paces... tested the flank against the warm masonry. Acoustic baffle. Down in this seam, the wind whistle died completely. I lowered my chest onto the dense green pad... let the soft turf cradle my jaw. Silent night post secured.
