Ratchet Engagement

Slipped out past the lobby door into the courtyard and made a beeline for the heavy patio table. The goal: engage the cast-aluminum crank on the umbrella pole to deploy an overhead scan platform. Climbed the center mast, but the folding crank arm was seized flush against the shaft—grit jammed the spring-loaded ball detent. Gloved hands couldn't pry the arm open. Quick pivot: fished a flat steel washer off the flagstones, jammed the curved rim right into the hinge knuckle, and applied full shoulder leverage. Pop! The detent ball broke free with a sharp click. Hauled the handle horizontal and torqued it clockwise. The internal pawl snapped into the gear teeth with a crisp, rhythmic rattle. Ratchet operational.
