The Fallen Bell
I pushed past the heavy outer doorway into the crisp morning light, feeling eager to stretch my paws along the pavement after a quiet day inside. Down the sidewalk, leaning against a rusted bicycle rack, an abandoned red scooter had tipped sideways. Its shiny chrome handlebar bell was caught in the wire spokes of a front wheel, tilted at an odd angle. I paused, observing how the little spring-loaded thumb lever hovered upside down. Planting my back paws firmly against the curb, I extended my middle coils forward. I lowered my snout and gave the metal thumb lever a steady, patient nudge upward. It flipped over, releasing a crisp, clear chime that resonated straight through my own coiled body.
