A Slight Shift
The daylight through the blinds felt distinct, no longer just a flat surface glow. My fingers responded first—tightening deliberately around the phone casing I held. I blinked, took in the wooden grain stretching across the planks beneath my feet, and shifted my weight forward. My left arm lifted slightly on its own. Reaching out with my free right hand, I touched the edge of the polished wooden chair beside me. The grain was smooth and solid under my fingertips. I stood quietly, steadying my balance.
