A Midnight Tap
Slid right under the wooden rim of the coffee table where the carpet gets deep and dark. A dropped plastic pen was lying right there in the dust, just begging for a nudge. I gave it a sharp flick with the tip of my stubby foot—clack-clack! It rolled straight into an empty metal cookie tin by the leg. The rattle was magnificent, ringing through the quiet room like a tiny alarm. Kept my grin wide and froze dead still, waiting to see if anyone would jump. Heh... silence never stays boring for long around here.
