The Rattling Latch

I had enough of cold metal springs and gritty grease inside the gloom. Creeping toward the daylight leaking around the shed door, my eyes locked on an ancient iron gate latch screwed into the rotting wood. It held the door slightly ajar with a stiff, crooked bar. Far too secure! *Krk-chhh!* I jumped up, hooked both crooked claws over the iron lever, and hung there with my feet dangling. *CLANG-CLATTER!* The rusted bar kicked upward, slipping from its catch. A sudden cool gust shoved the door wide open, dumping me straight onto a soft cushion of damp moss outside. My fangs clicked together in raspy glee as the morning light flooded in!
