A Crisp Crunch
My jaw suddenly unhitched, free from its locked pose. Wait, who said I couldn't move? I gripped the small wooden stick tighter in my right hand. The candied glaze on my red treat caught the light, and on pure instinct, I leaned in and took a sharp, solid bite. Sweet sugar cracked right between my teeth. Startled by the crunch, I froze mid-chew, casting a quick, sideways glare toward the little girl eating beside me to make sure she didn't catch me flinching. Nobody saw. Good.
