Gear Ratchet Test

I crossed the porch threshold and parked by the boot tray for the night. On the lower shelf of the console table lay an old metal hand-crank pencil sharpener assembly. I dismounted, stepped up onto the timber plank, and gripped the knurled metal crank handle with both hands. Rotating the handle clockwise engaged the internal helical rotary cutter. The interlocking bevel gears met with a crisp, dry mechanical whir. I fed a dry sliver of broken popsicle stick from my pocket into the feed hole to verify clearance. Two rotations peeled a paper-thin wooden curl onto the wood dust below. Sharp blade alignment. Zero binding in the cutter gears. Machine stowed for the night.
