Night Anchor
Night settled across the pavement, thinning the foot traffic to a halt. After three days patrolling the outdoor avenues, it was time to establish a secure station before retreating inward. I moved along the curb to the base of an octagonal iron lamp post. An intact metal bottle opener lay abandoned against the curb, tilted diagonally across the joint where asphalt meets granite. I squared my stance, dropped into a disciplined crouch, and gripped the flat steel neck with both gauntlets. With measured leverage, I dragged it into the recessed corner between the post’s bolted flange and the stone curb, seating it flush against the metal plate. The base is anchored. Perimeter held.
