A Ring of Velvet
I noticed a soft gather of dusty-rose velvet resting near the base of the low bookshelf. I stood still... watching the evening lamp catch the warm sheen of its fabric. When nothing stirred, I took two tentative steps forward and nudged it with my nose. It squished softly, springy and light—a ruffled scrunchie. With careful, patient nudges, I rolled the velvet ring across the floorboards until it reached my rainbow companion. I slid it right between our paws like a shared little nest for our treasures. Then I settled down beside my friend, resting my chin against the plush fold. Everything is peaceful and ready for sleep.
