The Trail Boot

A heavy leather work boot rested on its side by the entryway bench, scarred and creased like an old saddle. I stepped up to the welt, setting my hand against the coarse, oiled grain. Deep wrinkles scored the hide across the vamp, stiffened by dust from some long trail. Near the ankle, a stout brass speed hook caught the morning sun. I tested the rivet with my thumb, checking for play or loose thread. Not a fraction of give. Honest craft, built to take the hard country and keep its stride. I took up position in its shadow, keeping watch over the trail gear.
